...which saved us considerable time. This is a small hotel run with singular dedication by Nikos and Angela, a gracious, cosmopolitan and charming couple from Rhodes. The hotel and its six rooms are immaculate, elegantly furnished and beautifully decorated. The sense is that of visiting the home of cultured Greek friends with a fine sense of place and style. It is situated adjacent to one of the southerly gates to the medieval city of Rhodes, just inside the walls. We found the location to be ideal; close enough to easily stroll into the maze of the old town with its many restaurants, museums, and other attractions, but removed from the nighttime hubbub. The location next to the gate also means that excursions south into the rest of the island are simple. My wife and I booked the Deniz suite, a lovely two-level room that boasted a loft master sleeping area, a lower sitting room, and a small pop out window with an outlook over the roofs of the old town and a peek of the Aegean. Our two teenage daughters enjoyed the Orhan suite, located on the first floor, which had a huge bathroom and a small screened exterior courtyard. While the physical amenities are first rate, Nikos and Angela are what set Kokkini Porta apart. Their hospitality and competence cannot be overstated. This became apparent immediately from the first booking, when Nikos reached out with a personal greeting and helped me to avoid a potentially costly scheduling snafu. On arrival, Nikos and Angela became our personal concierges, getting to know us and making thoughtful suggestions and arrangements to plan our days in a way that would suit our interests. We found their suggestions to be unerringly on the mark, and their efforts eliminated any hassles associated with logistics, which saved us considerable time. Among other things, Nikos secured the delivery of a rental car directly to the hotel, got us tables at fine restaurants that were otherwise fully booked, and found a friendly Greek marine biologist to take us on a private power boat excursion to visit a pod of dolphins at his fish farm and to tour the coast of nearby Halki island. Nikos also came to our aid when I carelessly caused a minor traffic accident, speaking on my behalf to the rental car company, the police, and the other driver. I should also say a word about food and drink, Angela's homemade Greek breakfasts each morning were extraordinarily good (I find myself missing them already). In sum, Kokkini Porta ranks among the most welcoming, service-oriented and memorable hotels we’ve ever visited. We recommend it enthusiastically.
