World Class Experience !
The hotel Kokkini Porta Rossa is very swiftly going to establish itself as not only the finest on Rhodes - but also in the world. ...... This is the very essence of the hotel and you will feel instantly at home and spoilt by the owners Angela and Nikos.
It would be very easy to ride purely on the back of location as the hotel sits within the historical splendour of the Old Town of Rhodes (conveniently close to the entrance gate of St.John). The hotel, quite rightly, takes full advantage of that position - the restoration and decoration retains with pride all the beauty, historical influences and diverseness of Rhodes Old Town. But then you get so much more…
Sympathetically worked in are all the modern essentials and styling you could possibly hope for. Antiques, art and historical curios are often displayed with a striking contemporary inventiveness - making you not only appreciate the pieces but also marvel at the thought and care given over on how to showcase them.
The mellow coloured stone walls are now brought back to life alongside fine carpentry on the oak floors, the staircases, the balustrades, the dressing tables etc… The five suites are all allocated named (ours was Deniz) and they are light, spacious and so comfortable. Beds and bedding are fabulous - we slept so well! The thoughtfulness of complimentary extras go above and beyond what you would expect in such rooms. Even a note, left on the bed side table, updated us with a weather report for the days ahead.
The welcome we received throughout our stay was unobtrusive but always highly considerate. Pre stay we were even consulted about our preferred pillow choice (that was to be waiting on our bed for our arrival!) During our stay Angela and Nikos gently established what we would like to see and do locally / across the island - and in no time at all had arranged a number of activities for us to look forward to. Nothing was ever too much trouble.
The breakfasts were some of the finest we have ever enjoyed. A good choice of locally sourced and locally baked items - such as breads and pastries, amazing home made preserves and, impressively, not only honey but also spoons of pollen! We never really wanted breakfasts to end!
We are big fans of courtyard gardens and this hotel has one of the nicest we have seen. This is an amazing place to dine and relax within. A Mulberry tree (over 200 years old), orange trees, sweet scented Jasmine, lavenders, ornamental pots and mirrors, small stone sink fountain etc…all combine to make this space incredibly atmospheric and packed full of charm.
Dining in the Old Town offers up a number of excellent choices, but the hotel also offers for guests the opportunity to dine by request with them. We took advantage of this and the mezze menu is expertly tailored to your desires by a hugely talented on site chef. The quality and taste of the food were a revelation. The hotel created speciality cocktails were also another in a long, long list of highlights.
The final morning, with a heavy heart, it was time to leave. Even then the kindness and graciousness of Angela and Nikos was not yet over…and guests are waved away with a few nice surprises that sealed our time at Kokkini Porta Rossa as an absolutely perfect one.
This hotel is one we are so happy to recommend for so many reasons. This review could so easily have been 4 times as long with pleasure. But we don't want to spoil all the surprises to be found and even text can't quite do justice to what the owners have crafted here. Not only is it a fine hotel to choose when visiting Rhodes - it is a hotel that becomes one of the reasons to visit Rhodes! World class.
