Rhodian Tetradrachm (Four - Drachma coin) Rhodes, ca 350 - 325 BC
Front: Head of Apollo, Back: The Rose of Rhodes. Inscription: “ΡΟΔΙΩΝ” (Of the Rhodian People).
At its height (411 BC – 44 AD), Rhodes was the Queen of the Mediterranean and the “Wall Street” of its era (Roberto Timo).
It stood as a global centre of Art, Science, Commerce, and Politics.
Its currency, the Drachma, was highly esteemed and widely accepted throughout the known world.
A Rhodian tetradrachm is an ancient silver coin minted by the city-state of Rhodes, nominally valued at four drachmae. Famous for its exquisite classical artistry, it typically features the forward-facing head of the sun god Apoollo on the obverse and a blooming rose on the reverse.
